A BRASILIAN BAILE FUNK CHARITY EVENT
"A galera brasileira tomou conta da cidade" ("Brasilians take over the city") Brasil's major cities have some of the most dangerous slums in the world known as 'Favelas'. With limited food, crime-ridden streets, guns and severe drug trafficking, children are given little hope for a normal life in the favelas. Remarkably, this environment has also given rise to the world's most in-demand urban musical scene; the sound of funk carioca, or baile funk (Portuguese for "funk ball"). After the two previous highly successful 'Melbourne Funk Balls' in 2006, and a sister event in Sydney earlier this year that raised thousands of dollars for these kids and their families, international music crew Uber Lingua offers Melbourne the chance to come together again on Saturday May 12 at a charity funk ball at Miss Libertine. All funds from the event will go towards Brasilians working for the greater good of the community. Previous events have raised funds for Sister Carmelia, who works in one of the worst slums in the Taquara district in Rio. Similar community minded individuals Tia Almira in Salvador Bahia (North-East Brasil) and a Rio based community focussed Capoeira / Jujitsu school will benefit from this Funk Ball episode. By paying a small entry fee of $8, you can help support these efforts. Door prizes donated by a variety of businesses will be given out throughout the event, such as rare Brasilian Baile Funk compilation CDs, DVDs, clothing, lingerie, nights out, Brasilian waxing and much more... Key Melbourne based Brasilian & Angolan selectors alongside the Uber Lingua DJs will play some of the funkiest favela beats around. Baile Funk, Sambass, Batucada, Tropicalia and much much more... including Ortiz Pinto (Bad Boys Batucada), Tendekasha (Angola), Lord Lingham (PBS), Sheerien (Syd), bP (Uber Lingua), Guido Melo (Brasil), Ennio Styles (RRR), Gringo Branquinho, sakamoiz & Zaibatsu... A Capoeira performance will also come from Filhos da Bahia who also performed at the SYDNEY FUNK BALL earlier in 2007...
