GYPSY & BALKAN (& RUSSKI!) BASH TOO!

It's actually our forth party of this ilk in Melb but the second at Open Studio... but who's countin anyway...

After the success of the last party back in November 08 we just HAD to come back with another kickin party... this venue and crowd are so suited to this tangent... ohpah!

SATURDAY JAN 31 2009

OPEN STUDIO 204 High Street Northcote : $5 entry : 8 till late!

TUNE INTO PBS 106.7FM Friday Jan 30 at 10pm for a preview show!

After the November 08 party we presented, it was evident this particular tangent fitted well with the crowds and atmospheres of this fine cultural space. bP (Finnish sympathiser), Vulk Makedonski (Curse ov Dialect) & Russian Disko (Ang Fang) dropped party sets at the last one, and return alongside Vulgar Boatman from legendary act Vulgargrad to bring down the house with a stack of tear jerkin russki criminal songs, alongside the balkan bangers.

Aindrias de Staic brings his trans-european mix of beats, gypsy violin, irish-gaelic skat raps and general hyping of the crowd to the party. Ex-Brisbane flautist and clarinetist Kieran R drops dubby infused melodies and French vocals, alongside the Macedonian raps of the one and only Volk Mak. Percussionists and other musicians are sure to join this mad capped lineup!

All in the intimate surrounds of Open studio, a space renowned for its quality culture and damn good crepes! Come for dinner, we whole heartedly recommend it!

now with late adition to the bill PREM K
___

and the lineup is!

Vulgar Boatman (VulgarGrad) will play one hour of unpredictable Russki tracks that will go Gyp-Punk-Criminal-Rock pop and so much more... expect to be sent to the Kremlin.

Prem K (Tabla)

is a Melbourne-based percussionist, who originates from the lush coastal state of Kerala in Southern India. Coming from a musical family (his sister plays the violin and veena and his father plays the sitar), he began learning the tabla from the age of nine and later studied under the renowned guru, Ustad Narayan, for 8 years. In his late teens, Prem got into western styles of music, such as jazz, hip hop, and house, and his mind began to wander around the application of his skills in carnatic music (South Indian classical music) to contemporary sounds, and consequently, got involved, in the local pop music industry in Kerala, as a session musician and composer. Prem moved to Melbourne in 2005, and motivated by the desire to jam with electronic artists and DJs, migrated to the surreal Roland Handsonic electronic tabla, designed for ethnic percussionists.

Aindrias de Staic (Ireland)

Touring the world presenting his "around the world on 80 quid" theatre/comedy piece, Irish gypsy fiddler Aindrias de Stiac AKA Pikey is back from his adventurous travels in europe, the galway boy is back in town with sounds form the west of Ireland, the latest european gyspy remixes form prague and barcelona and much moreÖ Expect to hear the unexpected an dance to global beats that rock your innner gyspy soul. Dance! dance! dance!!!!!!

Volk Makedonski

Melbourne's own Macedonian main man Volk Makedonski drops one of his legendary sets of proud music from the region... He may even pick up the mic we've provided and see what mother tongue raps come out!

Russian Disko (Melb)

Russian Disko is a member of the Ang Fang Quartet and has a vast array of eastern euro music... a special interest in Ruski Disko gets him into trouble on occasion...

Kieran R (Clarinet)

Macro is originally from Brisbane and is a member of the tri-lingual Prussia duo... Also a former presenter on 4ZZZ up there, he performed with Uber Lingua at the Bellingen Global Carnival in 2007 as a participant in the YA LINGO! multi-lingual MC competition. In 2008 he moved to Melbourne joining the UL crew and becoming a mainstay of the weekly club... as MC Macro, he raps in French...

he is however a multi-instrumentalist and picks up a clarinet (and maybe a flute) for the Gypsy & Balkan Bash!

bP

With cultural diversity his primary passion, Australian DJ/producer 'bP' (Brendan Palmer) has been representing the musically 'not so represented' for nearing two decades. He has wandered the world gathering sounds and has performed in places as diverse as Barcelona, Berlin, Dublin, London, Tijuana, Mexico city and Helsinki to name a few...  In 2004 he launched Uber Lingua and his sonic activity has grown exponentially playing literally hundreds of gigs and promoting culturally charged music in most capital cities of Australia. bP's sets traverse language, culture, genre, history and social scenes; deliberately defiant of mainstream music fashions, he presents an intersection of underground and outernational sounds that capture his imagination. Roots to Futurism, East to West, Minimal to Maximal are all sonic stops on bP's translingual express. Brendan additionally works as a producer at the legendary Melbourne radio station Triple R during the day and presents the weekly 'Dialectic' radio program on the web and nationally via the Community Radio Network Satellite. ______
